How It Works

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the gastrointestinal tract is the friendly bacteria it employs to maximize the nutritional benefits of the food you eat. There are over three pounds of these little microorganisms that not only help to break down certain substances that escape digestive fluids, but also to manufacture healthful compounds that are reabsorbed into the blood.

Deficiencies of these friendly bacteria are not uncommon due to sickness, bad eating habits and antibiotic use. Fermented foods, such as yogurt and kefir, provide some of these friendly bacteria, but probiotic supplements contain much greater amounts.

THE STORY BEHIND ACIDOPHILUS - BIFODOBACTERIUM

While the discovery and naming of individual probiotic strains is fairly new, the concept of eating fermented food goes WAY back. By about 500 A.D., Koreans had found a new technique to preserve food for winter: burying jars of cabbage, cucumber or radishes mixed with strong spices. Known as kimchi, this fermented food is one of many that offers health benefits for the immune system. Fermented foods have grown in popularity. But for some of us, capsules are much easier to swallow than kimchi, sauerkraut and fermented drinks. L. acidophilus is probably best-known for being an ingredient in many dairy products. In fact, the Lactobacillus genus is widely used in making cheese and yogurt. It creates bacteriocins, which help prevent food spoilage. Acidophilus was Nature’s Sunshine’s first probiotic supplement. It has been popular for nearly three decades!

Ingredients

Medicinal Ingredients: Each capsule contains Lactobacillus rhamnosus (ATCC 7469) 2.8 billion cfu, Lactobacillus acidophilus (ATCC 4356) 800 million cfu and Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum (ATCC 15707) 400 million cfu. Non-medicinal Ingredients: Gelatin, maltodextrin and magnesium stearate.

Recommended Use:

Dosage (adults, adolescents and children 6 years of age and older): Take two capsules daily. If you are on antibiotics or antifungals, take at least 2-3 hours before or after.

Risk Information: If you have fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhea or severe abdominal pain, consult a practitioner prior to use. If symptoms of digestive upset occurs and/or persists beyond 3 days, discontinue use and consult a practitioner. If you have a milk allergy or an immune-compromised condition, do not use this product.
